Real-Ear Measurement (REM): Precise Hearing Aid Fitting

Purchasing hearing aids is only part of the solution—how they’re programmed makes all the difference. At Greenville Hearing Center, we use real-ear measurement (REM) to ensure your hearing aids are customized precisely to your ears and hearing needs.

What is real-ear measurement (REM)?
A real-ear measurement is a quick, in-office verification test that uses a tiny microphone placed in your ear. It allows us to measure how sound is actually being delivered by your hearing aids, while you are wearing them. Instead of relying on hearing aid manufacturer defaults or estimates, we verify—right in your ear—that speech sounds are clear, comfortable, and at the right volume for your hearing loss.

Why does this matter?
Every ear is unique. Without verification, hearing aids are programmed based on averages, which can lead to:

  • Speech sounding muffled or unclear

  • Sounds being too loud or too soft

  • More return visits for adjustments

With real-ear measurement, we take the guesswork out. The result is a more natural listening experience from the start.

What to expect during your appointment
The process is simple and painless:

  • A soft probe microphone is gently placed in your ear

  • You’ll hear a series speech passages at different volumes

  • We measure and adjust your hearing aids in real time

The entire process takes just a few minutes but makes a significant difference in how well your hearing aids perform.

Our commitment to best practices
Real-ear measurement (also known as real-ear verification) is considered the gold standard for hearing aid fittings. It’s one of the ways we ensure you’re getting the most out of your technology—and hearing your best in everyday life.
